A neon sign consists of exposed or hidden lighting elements called "neon" or "cold cathode". These lighting elements are made of hollow glass tubes filled with inert gas such as argon or neon. A pair of electrodes produces a voltage drop that lights up the gas. The neon gas glows orange-red while argon emits a blue glow. Different colors are produced thanks to powder in the inner portion of the tube.
